As I strolled across the stage to grab my diploma that would once and forever prove to my parents that I was indeed a ‘batchelor of marketing’, I thought the world was mine. NOPE!

That was 4 years ago. I now have a few years of sales under my belt at DriveTime (I know, not exactly high end but they did require a 4yr degree) and outside sales selling business machines and IT. Currently I work for a subprime finance company as an account manager (not collections, more administrative and supervisory). Not my dream job.

I now have an interview at a dealership that sells Porsche, Land Rover and Jaaaaaag. I know I am capable of interviewing well, looking nice and selling myself - but what should I expect? I am great at customer service, I have an excellent track record in sales (with good references), and the guy I am interviewing with road raced in the 80s (I currently autocross and road race with ChumpCar). Seems like I’m setup well for this interview but I am hoping to get some insight into the field. What buzzwords are they looking for? I’m single and can work crazy hours - worth bringing up? Perfect driving record as well.

I want this bad as I know I can succeed in this position, I’m just always looking for a competitive advantage and that is where you guys come in!

I want you to get this job as badly as I want to own this car.

I’d brush up on details on the full product lines and options for all three brands; maybe you’ll get a chance to impress with your car knowledge (way too many salespeople know way too little about the cars they’re selling).

A looooong time ago (80s) I thought about selling Mercs. The guy who sold me my ‘87 300D told me that usually you had to start with lesser marques - Chevys, VWs, Fords - prove yourself, and then move up to the majors. But hey, you have the interview. I’m guessing product knowledge will make it or break it.

Good luck! Unfortunately you might actually need Demuro for this one :(

This is what I’m hoping. Where I have succeeded in the past is by qualifying potential customers and feeling them out. Its easy to drown someone in information that isn’t relevant to them or their needs. product knowledge is only valuable if you know when and how to apply it. I do need to brush up on options and whatnot and drop a few examples similar to above (but much better)

Don’t bring up that your single and can work crazy hours. They’ll forever expect it from you. Not to mention you will be the first they call when they need to bring in extra people for the day. Plus, it’s not their business to know your personal life. Plus plus, you might not always be single. They will figure it out quick enough on their own when they see you burning the midnight oil occasionaly after a busy day instead clocking out after 8 hours and leaving the paperwork for tomorrow.

Other than that, I can’t really help you with dealer specifics.

Good luck!

You should be fine. Just dress nice (I’d recommend scoping out the place and seeing how other salesmen dress) and don’t get too nervous. Having an interview is >50% of getting the job.

I have an insider (the one who passed along my resume), so I’m good on dress. I’m not going to go full-funeral, but rather towards what they wear day-to-day as you suggest.

Sweet. I think you’re gonna do fine. Start looking at their used lot to decide on a company car. :)

Hey Sam, you worked as a porter at a dealership, right?

Detailing, actually. But yeah, a Jag/Land Rover/Volvo dealership.

Sorry, must’ve got you mixed up with another oppo member. But I just have a few questions. I’m trying to help my younger brother get a job at a dealership, he's not really enjoying his current job and is working some solid hours as he saves up for his car. How would he go about getting a job at a dealership as a porter or detailer? He can wash/clay/wax/polish very well if that'll help.

I’d recommend looking at the dealership’s website first. Usually they’ll have all their job listings on an employment page.

Oddly enough none of my local dealers have an employment page on their websites.. I tried looking at their corporate websites as well.

I already was asked ‘do you need to give a 2weeks notice’ and was sent for a drug screening. I would say it went well for a first interview! Thanks for the help!
